"And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [enduring] weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination."
Surah Luqman, verse 14A period of physical and emotional transition
After the birth of a child, a new stage of life begins. This postpartum period is often marked by immense joy, but also by many upheavals.
Fatigue, mental load, hormonal and physical changes: the body and mind are greatly stressed. The abdomen may remain rounded, muscles are weakened, and the supporting tissues of the pelvis - especially the perineum - have been severely strained.
Resuming exercise after childbirth should be done with caution, gentleness, and respect for each woman's rhythm. There is no universal timeframe: every body is unique.
The lochia period: a necessary time for rest
During the time of the Prophet ﷺ, women who had given birth would sit for forty days.
— Umm Salamah رضیالله عنهIn Islam, the post-natal period is clearly defined. These forty days generally correspond to the time of lochia, which is the natural blood discharge after childbirth.
When to resume exercise?
In practice, adapted physical activity can be considered approximately 6 to 8 weeks after childbirth — subject to favorable medical advice and after perineal rehabilitation.
Perineal rehabilitation: an essential step
The perineum is one of the most sensitive areas after childbirth. This key muscle of the pelvic floor closes the lower part of the pelvis and plays an essential role in maintaining the organs and the abdominal belt.

What happens
Pregnancy and childbirth lead to significant relaxation of the perineum, temporarily weakening it.

Rehabilitation
It is generally prescribed by a doctor or midwife and performed by a trained professional. It prevents urinary leaks and prolapse.

Impact on sports resumption
Not neglecting this step is fundamental: it ensures a more serene, more comfortable return to sport and minimizes risks.
Listen to your body and respect your rhythm
Every woman is unique, as is every pregnancy and childbirth. The resumption of sport must therefore be progressive, with a light to moderate intensity.
Pain, discomfort, or excessive fatigue are signals to be taken seriously. Taking a break is not a failure, but proof of respect for your body. Being accompanied by a doctor or midwife is highly recommended.
Establishing a gentle and regular routine allows the body to gradually get used to exertion again. Starting with short sessions, but remaining consistent, is often the key to a sustainable recovery.
What physical activities should be favored after childbirth?
The choice of activities should always be made in agreement with the recommendations of a healthcare professional, as certain situations may present contraindications.
Recommended gentle activities
Brisk walking
Stair climbing
Postnatal yoga
Stationary bike
These practices allow you to move gently, gradually strengthen your body, and rediscover positive sensations without performance pressure.
Comfort also comes from the chosen outfit. Modest sportswear allows you to practice without exposing your figure, while feeling comfortable and confident, even outdoors.
The benefits of postpartum exercise
There are two blessings that many people do not appreciate at their true value: health and free time.
— The Prophet ﷺ, reported by Al-Bukhâri (Riyad as-Salihin n°97)Numerous studies show that adapted physical activity helps to improve mood and reduce symptoms of baby blues. Movement promotes the release of endorphins, the hormones of well-being, which are particularly valuable during this transitional period.
Resuming sport after childbirth is a true gift you give yourself. Beyond the physical benefits, it is an opportunity to reconnect with your body, strengthen your emotional balance, and preserve your long-term health.
With patience, appropriate support, and a benevolent approach, returning to sport can become a positive, respectful, and deeply enriching experience.
